Sara Cardina — Timeless Craft, Contemporary Soul

Writer: Art Center CaravelArt Center Caravel

At Art Center Caravel, we are proud to present the intricate and soulful work of Portuguese craft artist Sara Cardina, whose pieces are now available through our gallery — alongside the work of her creative family.

Hailing from Caldas da Rainha, Sara embodies what it means to live artfully, proving that it's never too late to begin anew. Her journey into jewelry started later in life, not as a continuation of a youthful dream, but as a conscious reinvention — one that blends technical mastery with emotional depth.

A Craft Rooted in Nature

Sara's artistic language is shaped by nature. Leaves, shells, spirals, circular forms — her designs are poetic, almost meditative. She works with a fascinating range of materials, including:

  • Precious Metal Clay (PMC) — a pure metal paste that allows sculptural expression in silver, gold, and bronze

  • Bronze clay, copper clay, white bronze

  • Glass, silicone, ceramic, textiles, stones, and 3D elements

Each material carries meaning. Each form is a quiet gesture, drawn from the landscape, from memory, and from feeling.

A Family of Creators

Art is not just Sara’s vocation — it’s her family’s shared language. Her son, Dário, and sisters Ana and Isabel Cardina also work in ceramics and sculpture, forming a small but vibrant constellation of creators. Many of their works are now part of the Caravel gallery collection, connecting the island of Madeira with the artistic energy of Caldas da Rainha.

From Personal Reinvention to Artistic Recognition

After training at the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery in the UK and receiving mentorship from names such as Lisa Cain, Hadar Jacobson, and Nadine Gueniou, Sara became a member of the PMC Guild, developing a unique and thoughtful style that has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions.

Her story is a reminder that artistic success isn’t about when you start — it’s about how deeply you commit. And in Sara’s case, the depth shows in every detail.
